For nearly all of the roughly 300,000 years that anatomically modern humans have existed, our species lived by foraging — hunting animals, fishing, and gathering wild plants, nuts, and roots. Then, within the last twelve thousand years, in at least seven separate regions of the world, people who had always moved with the seasons began instead to plant seeds, tend herds, and stay in one place. That shift — the Neolithic Revolution — did more to reshape human life than almost any single event before or since, and, remarkably, it happened independently on nearly every inhabited continent.
Foraging societies were not simple. Hunter-gatherer bands accumulated deep, precise knowledge of the plants, animals, seasons, and terrain around them, and evidence from surviving foraging peoples suggests many worked fewer hours to meet their basic needs than farmers would later. Bands were typically small, mobile, and relatively egalitarian, since a family could carry only so much and a stored surplus was hard to defend or transport. What foraging could not easily support was density: a given stretch of land could feed only a limited number of foragers, which capped how large and how permanent a settlement could become.
Beginning around 10,000 BCE, communities in the Fertile Crescent of Southwest Asia began deliberately planting wild wheat and barley and penning wild goats and sheep. Similar transitions to farming and herding unfolded, on their own timetables and with their own crops, in the Yellow and Yangzi river valleys of China (rice and millet), in Mesoamerica (maize, beans, and squash), in the Andes of South America (potatoes and quinoa), and in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa and New Guinea. No single cause explains every case, but a common factor was climate: the end of the last Ice Age, roughly 11,700 years ago, brought a warmer, more stable climate that made cultivating specific plants a reliable strategy for the first time.
Farming did not spread because it made life easier. Skeletal evidence from early farming communities often shows more tooth decay, more repetitive-strain injury, and shorter average stature than in comparable foraging populations — the price of a diet narrowed to a handful of staple crops. What agriculture offered instead was more calories per acre, which supported far higher population density. A farming community could, within a few generations, simply outnumber and out-produce its foraging neighbors, and use its surplus grain to sustain specialists who did not have to farm at all: potters, priests, soldiers, and rulers. Once agriculture existed anywhere nearby, competing with it on its own terms became difficult to avoid.
Nearly everything covered in the rest of this course — cities, writing, organized religion, standing armies, and the state itself — depends on the food surplus and settled population that agriculture first made possible. The Neolithic Revolution did not happen once; it happened independently across the globe, which is itself a lesson: when a technology confers a large enough advantage, human societies tend to discover it more than once, on more than one continent, without ever being in contact.
